Buying Miyuki beads from us makes sense, because we only stock the best here at The Bead Fairy. Miyuki are the gold standard for glass seed beads due to their consistency in size, shape and quality. Furthermore, their range is impressive, and we will cover some shapes, sizes and finishes in this brief article.
Shapes and Sizes
Certainly, the most well known shape is the rocailles, or seed beads to you and me. Manufactured round with round holes, round with square holes or even hexagon shaped. These little beauties are so versatile.
The round rocailles with round holes are the most popular and are available in these sizes:
- 15/0 – 1.5mm*
- 12/0 – 1.8mm
- 11/0 – 2.0mm*
- 10/0 – 2.2mm
- 9/0 – 2.5mm
- 8/0 – 3.0mm*
- 6/0 – 4.0mm*
- 5/0 – 5.0mm
- 2/0 – 6.0mm
- 1/0 – 6.5mm
*Only these sizes are available to buy at The Bead Fairy, but others are available to order on request.
Round rocailles with square holes are only available in sizes 15/0 to 6/0 and the hexagon cuts in sizes 15/0 to 5/0. Don’t confuse seed beads with Delica beads, which are a different shape. Seed beads are round whereas Delicas are tubular. We will cover Delicas in a separate article, along with other Miyuki bead types.
Also, bugle beads are tubular but longer in length than Delicas. They can have round holes or square holes. Sizes range from a length of 1.5mm up to 12mm, with a diameter of 1.5mm up to 2.5mm.
Not only colour make seed beads so attractive, but also the various finishes. Traditional finishes have been around since mass production started. But modern techniques do give us all the colours of the rainbow.
Finishes listed in Miyuki’s sample kit include the following but this is not an exhaustive list:
- Frost Rainbow
- Dyed Color
- Dyed Color
- Gold Luster
- Inside Color
- Glass Enamel
- Semi-Frost Silverline
- Semi-Frost Inside Color
- Dyed Color
- Metallic Frost
- Special Plating
Phew!! With so many options to choose from, a sample kit is essential. Pictures do not do justice to any bead products. Therefore, to be able to see colours and finishes first hand is the best way to decide what you need for your beading projects.
Because we are only a small to micro sized business we cannot carry every type, size and finish of beads. This is where the personal service comes in. As a result, requests to visit you with our sample kit are welcome. So, if we don’t have what you need in stock, we will order in your choices for you. Most importantly, we make buying Miyuki beads as easy as possible for you.
You may not need full packets of beads for a specific project. If so, you can send us a copy of your materials list and we can make you up a kit for exactly what you need in your chosen colours. This also applies to any of the made up jewellery pieces available here. We provide links to the original tutorials or patterns. Finally, see something you like and we can supply you with what you need to make a piece for yourself. Above all, if you fancy giving beaded jewellery making a try, let us help.
